“Shelter” explores the human need for protection and belonging through a solitary figure wrapped in the American flag. Standing before an open horizon, she embodies a pivotal moment of transition, when an unfamiliar place becomes a refuge and the possibility of a new beginning. Reflecting on the immigrant experience, including that of people leaving Cuba, the painting considers acceptance, resilience, and the search for a safe place to rebuild one’s life.
